Freddie Mercury's death comes just 2 months earlier Queen were due to celebrate their 21st anniversary with their current line-up.

It was in February, 1971, when John Deacon arrived on bass to complete a line-up formed the previous year.

Now they join a staggering list of British artists who have suffered the premature expiry of a valued colleague - including Led Zeppelin, Ozzy Osbourne, Thin Lizzy, The Rolling Stones, Def Leppard and AC/DC.

21 MAGIC YEARS

1970

Freddie Mercury (Vocals); Roger Taylor (drums); Brian May (guitar) and Mike Grose (bass) form Queen. Grose is replaced after just one gig. His replacement, Doug, also lasts only i concert. Barry Mitchell is drafted in but the band are still non happy with the line upward.

1971

John Deacon is recruited as bassist. The debut is at the Higher of Estate Management, London.

Queen is nevertheless not a total time occupation for the ring members - Freddie runs a clothes stall in Kensington Market place. John teaches, Brian is working on a doctorate and Roger is reading for a biology degree.

1972

The ring sign a management, tape and publishing bargain with Trident Audio Productions. They start work on their debut LP, eventually signing to EMI.

Freddie designs the ring crest.

1973

Queen are launched equally EMI artistes at London's Marquee Club on Apr nine. Their debut single, Proceed Yourself Alive, and album, Queen, are released in July.

They begin their first major tour as support to Mott the Hoople at Leeds Boondocks Hall on Nov 12 and record their kickoff Radio One session for Sounds of the Seventies.

1974

Their debut in Commonwealth of australia is not a great success but in March they begin their first headlining tour of the UK, coinciding with the release of Queen Two.

April sees the start of a US tour supporting Mott the Hoople and the release of their 2nd single, The Vii Seas of Rhye.

LP number iii, Sheer Eye Attack, and single, Killer Queen, are released in November and Queen begin another UK bout.

1975

A headlining bout of the United states is so successful that matinee performances have to exist scheduled but some shows are then cancelled when Freddie is stricken by a pharynx virus.

The single, Now I'thou Here, is released and Queen are voted "Band of the Year" past readers of Tune Maker.

The debut Japanese tour finds the band besieged at Tokyo aerodrome by thousands of fans.

Freddie is presented with an Ivor Novello honor for Killer Queen.

They split with Trident and sign up with Elton John's managing director, John Reid.

The anthology, A Dark at the Opera and unmarried, Maverick Rhapsody, are released, with a UK tour beginning at Liverpool's Empire Theatre. Their Christmas Eve concert at Hammersmith Odeon is broadcast simultaneously on BBC TV and Radio i.

1976

Freddie receives his 2nd Ivor Novello laurels - for Bohemian Rhapsody. The band bout for four months in the US, Japan and Commonwealth of australia and, in Apr, their picture, Queen at the Rainbow, is released.

A free concert in London's Hyde Park draws 150,000 people.

Singles, Y'all're My Best Friend and Somebody To Love are released.

1977

Eight months are spent touring United states, Canada and Europe - the innovative 'Crown' Lighting rig, costing £50,000 is unveiled.

LP number 5, A Day at the Races, is released along with the single, Necktie Your Mother Downward and EP, Good Old Fashioned Lover Male child.

In October they embark on a three month American tour and Bohemian Rhapsody is named as the best single in 25 years at the British Record Manufacture Britannia Awards.

The terminate of the twelvemonth sees the release of the News of the Earth LP and the double A-sided We Are The Champions/Nosotros Will Stone You.

1978

Queen split with John Reid to set own management company with Jim Beach.

1989

Queen's 16th anthology, The Miracle, is released, along with the singles, I Want Information technology All, Breakthru, The Invisible Human, and Scandal. Two children record Who Wants To Love Forever for the British Bone Marrow Donor Appeal, a charity supported by Brian May.

Queen At The Beeb is released.

1990

The ring receive a special BPI honor for their outstanding contribution to music. A 20th Anniversary political party goes on all night. Brian works on his start project for the stage, Macbeth, while Roger concentrates on The Cross.

1991

Innuendo - Queen's 17th album - is released and, from it a brace of striking singles - Innuendo, I'thou Going Slightly Mad, Headlong and The Show Must Go On.

The Queen catalogue is released on CD in America and in that location's the long awaited Greatest Hits 2.
